Two back to back running events in Mumbai end with the death of a runner
The marathon calendar in Mumbai was packed with two back to back running events during the weekend. Organized by BNP Green Runners – a running community formed by running enthusiasts, the second edition of BNP Endurathon was held on Saturday, 18th July 2015 in the greenery of Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali, Mumbai. Hundreds of runners participated in the two race formats which the event offered – 25K race which had two loops of 12.5K each, with two hill climbs in each loop and 12.5K race – a single loop having two hill climbs. Runners enjoyed running in the peace and tranquility of the National Park and the scrumptious breakfast served after the race. Finishers were caught by a pleasant surprise when they received medals made of pebble stones! The event was very well organized and received a lot of appreciation from the participants on social media.
Another running event, Run India Run 10K Challenge was held on Sunday, 19th July 2015, in Borivali, Mumbai. Organized by Total Sports & Fitness, a renowned name in the business of sports accessories, the marathon was held under the aegis of Mumbai Suburban District Athletics Association. Since this race was a qualifier for Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) 2016, most of the runners participated with an objective of qualifying for SCMM 2016. This event witnessed an unfortunate death of a runner Stephen Menezes, who collapsed during the run. The incident has left the running fraternity of Mumbai in a state of shock! Many took to social media to express their grief and voiced their concern.
Cherrapunjee Marathon held amidst much fanfare
Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr Mukul Sangma, flagged off the 2nd edition of the Cherrapunjee Marathon held on 17th July 2015, and later participated in the event along with the other runners. Besides the Chief Minister, the event witnessed participation of many of his Cabinet Ministers, bureaucrats, corporates, policemen, army men and people with disabilities. The local runners were joined by running enthusiasts from different parts of the country and numerous other foreign countries.
The categories in the marathon included Elite Indian Professional Race (full marathon of 42.2km and half marathon of 21.1km), Amateur Race (full marathon of 42.2km and half marathon of 21.1km), Kid’s Fun Run of 2km and an Inclusive Run, open to all including persons with different abilities.
The first three winners of the Full Marathon in the male category were Vikas Kumar, Jomsingstar Ramsiej and Honton Rynjah, while the first three winners in the female category were Shyamilee Singh, Darishisha Iangjuh and Habari Warjri.
Due to the picturesque landscape of Meghalaya, this marathon gifted the runners a scenic running route with many interesting sights along the way.
Bengaloreans laced up for TROT-007
The 7th edition of The Run of Raramuri Tribe (TROT-007) was held on 18th July 2015, near KSIT, Kanakapura Road. Directed by a well known runner and coach, Dr. Gladson Johnson, the event was organized to raise funds for the education and health expenses for HIV infected children. The runners ran in three categories – Full Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K Run. Finishers received certificates and Tribal Medal.
SCMM 2016 opens registration on 21st July 2015
The biggest marathon in the country and one of the biggest in the world, Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon opens registration for Full Marathon(42.195K) and DHL Corporate Champions (42.195K relay race) on 21st July 2015. The registration for Half Marathon (21.097k) will open on 30th July 2015, Dream Run(6K) on 18th August 2015, Senior Citizen’s Run (4.3K) and Champions with Disability(2.4K) on 24th August 2015. The 13th edition of this marathon will be held on Sunday, 17th January 2016 and has popular Bollywood actor John Abraham as the Face of the event. Mr. Hugh Jones, who is a living legend in the world of marathon running, with 22 marathon wins and is among the top five record holders in the history of the race, is the Race Director.
International Marathon -Update
Stage set for annual Bogota International Half Marathon, Colombia
The 16th edition of Bogota International Half Marathon is going to be held on 26th July 2015. The event will witness participation of big names from the running world, competing for a podium finish. Ethiopians Tadese Tola, the 2013 world marathon bronze medalist and Birhane Dibaba, winner of 2015 Tokyo Marathon, will be on the starting line along with Kenya’s Sharon Cherop, the 2011 world marathon bronze medalist and Brazil’s pan-American marathon champion Solonei Da Silva. Few of the other elite runners include Kenyans Stanley Biwott, the fastest half-marathoner in 2015 having won City-Pier-City-Loop half marathon in 00:59:20, Amane Gobena, second in this year’s Paris Marathon in a personal best of 2:23:30, USA’s Janet Cherobon and Kenya’s Mirriam Wangari.
Started in 2000, this marathon holds IAAF Gold Label Road Race status, one of only two of this stature in South America, the other being the Carrera de la Mujer which is also in Bogota. The competition features both elite and popular (or recreational) sections within the half marathon and 10 km races. Around 45,000 runners are expected to take part in this event.
