Indian Women Wrestling Team Bags Silver

The Indian women’s wrestling team, led by Commonwealth Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat , put up a top-notch performance at the Kazakhstan President’s Cup held in Astana, Kazakhstan which was held between 24th and 26th July. They finished 2nd overall to bag the silver medal as hosts Kazakhstan-1 finished with top honours. The male wrestlers and the Greco-Roman wrestlers failed to match their women counterparts’ feat as they finished 4th and 8th respectively. Here is a quick look at the Indian wrestlers’ performance in the free style category

Indian women wrestling team excels:

Position: 2nd (Silver Medal)

With Vinesh Phogat in the 48 kg category and many other Commonwealth Games medalists like Lalita Sehrawat (55 KG) and Anita (63 KG), the Indian women wrestlers’ contingent seemed a promising unit. Vinesh, Lalita and Anita won all their bouts and were given decent support by Sakshi Malik, who lost only one bout in the 58 KG category. Here are the team results for each round:

No. of teams: 5

Round 1: India 7-1 Kazakhstan 2
Round 2: India 5-3 Mongolia
Round 3: Did not play
Round 4: India 4-4 Kazakhstan 1
Round 5: India 6-2 Uzbekistan

Indian male wrestlers: Freestyle

Position:  4th

Narsingh Pancham Yadav (74 KG) was the lone bright spot in the Indian men’s Freestyle wrestling team as he won all his bouts. Yadav, who will be participating in the World Championships to book an Olympic berth in September, displayed great courage and aggression on the mat. Krishan Kumar too impressed in the 125 KG category, winning 3 out of his 4 bouts. Here are the team results for each round:

No. of teams: 5

Round 1: Did not play
Round 2: India 3-5 Kazakhstan 2
Round 3: India 3-5 Mongolia
Round 4: India 1-7 Kazakhstan 1
Round 5: India 6-2 Uzbekistan

So a promising performance for the Indian women wrestlers that augurs well for the World Championships in September.
