A stellar performance from captain Wazir Singh helped Puneri Paltan restrict Telugu Titans to a 29-29 draw in the last match of the Hyderabad leg of the Pro Kabaddi League 2015. The skipper scored 11 raid points and was at his menacing best. But unfortunately, Wazir could not lead his team to a victory as Telugu Titans salvaged a draw owing to some last-minute brilliance. The draw also saw the Titans occupy the pole position on the league table as they now have 42 points from 11 games.
Wazir Singh leaves Telugu Titans shell-shocked, Sukesh Hegde leads fightback:
Puneri Paltan looked an entirely different side on Friday night as they went all guns blazing against an in-form Telugu Titans. The Hyderabad outfit had registered two one-sided victories prior to this game but failed to contain the agility and guile of Wazir Singh. He struck early in the match with a 3-point Super Raid. Pune did not resent from attacking and went on to inflict an all-out. They stretched their lead to 8 points as the score read 12-4 in the eighth minute.
The Titans, however, regained their focus and began to claw their way back into contention. Raider Sukesh Hegde played an important role in this phase of the game as he picked up vital raid points to level the score 16-16. The 17th minute saw Puneri Paltan suffer an all-out as Hegde pulled out a raid to send three Pune defenders back. The first half ended at 20-18 with Puneri Paltan having a slender two-point advantage.
Hyderabad comes back strong to avoid defeat, remain unbeaten at home:
Both the teams resorted to tactical play in the second half as very few points were scored. Puneri Paltan managed to stay in the lead for a major part of the match but faltered towards the last five minutes. They allowed the ‘escape artist’ Sukesh Hegde with a brilliant touch point and Wazir Singh was tackled in the successive raid. The score read 27-27 with only three minutes left and there was immense pressure on both the teams.
The penultimate minute saw Puneri Paltan jump ahead with a two-point lead when Sukesh Hegde was pinned down and Pravin Niwale won a touch point. Prashant Rai K was alert enough to win a point back for Telugu Titans on the pursuit and the home side then brought down Niwale in the 40th minute. Deepak Nivas Hudda avoided risks and let the last raid of the match go empty. The game thus ended in a stalemate and Puneri Paltan came close to winning yet again but could not do so. However, both teams were awarded three points apiece and Pune managed to get themselves out of the eighth place. They now stand 7th on the table with 13 points.
