HS Prannoy reached back to back finals on the International Badminton circuit and won the Indonesia Masters Grand Prix Gold. Here is an interview with the promising badminton star.
It had been quite a fortnight for the young and talented HS Prannoy. The disappointment of a tough defeat in the Vietnam Open final, then the joy and the emotional high of winning first career title at Indonesia Masters Grand Prix Gold – the Pullela Gopichand-mentored HS Prannoy had experienced it all. Recently Sports Rediscovered got an opportunity to have a short chat with the 22-year-old Kerala shuttler after his wonderful achievement.
SR: Congratulations on your maiden career title. How does it feel after the win?
Prannoy: First of all thank you so much. Feeling really happy with the way I played both the tournaments. And a title was really due in this stage of my career and I am happy that I could pull off one great tournament.
SR: It must have been very disappointing to lose the Vietnam Open final after being so close. The loss must have motivated you even further to get your first title the very next week?
Prannoy: Yeah was really disappointed after Vietnam finals. I really had a great chance that day but I was 10 per cent short of confidence and was thinking about winning while playing which cost me the title. But yeah I knew I was playing well, so had to really focus again and start fresh in Indonesia and could really play confidently out there.
SR: Back to back finals is a great effort. That also shows how good your fitness level is. How have you been working on your fitness?
Prannoy: Yeah, fitness has improved a lot over the years. For last some months I had been working on my strength for legs and hands and it has improved a lot. And it has been showing on court as well, because my legs really pushed well for 2 weeks continuously. But I think there are still lots of areas to improve on my fitness to become a world class player.
SR: What are the areas of your game that you are presently working on to improve?
Prannoy: I am working a lot on my physical fitness. Trying to do so many new things off court and it has been helping me. On court I have not changed anything drastically, but just doing training much more intensely than before.
SR: What are your goals for the rest of the year?
Prannoy: As of now I am just looking forward to play well in every tournament which I play. If I play well, my world ranking would obviously go up. It’s 43 right now and it will go up after this win and I hope I can be into the top 25 by the end of the year.
HS Prannoy will be in action at the France Super Series and Bitburger Gold event in October.
Sports Rediscovered would like to thank HS Prannoy for finding out a few minutes from his busy schedule for the chat and would also like to wish him all the very best for his career.
