International Master Nisha Mohota emerged champion at the 41st National Women Challengers Chess Championships 2014 held at Pedem Sports Complex in Mapusa. Mohota who belonged to Petroleum Sports Promotion Board was declared the winner via a tie-break after she finished on par with International Master S Vijayalakshmi of Air India.
The overnight joint leaders were both placed on 9.5 points with the completion of 11 rounds. In the Buchholz tie-breaker, Nisha had a score of 74.5 to edge past Vijayalakshmi who scored 74.
The bronze medal went to Hinduja Reddy of Andhra Oradesh who had scored 8.5 points.
The victory was more sweet for Nisha as this is her first senior national title since 2005. Her consistency and calmness were factors that were instrumental in her victory as an elated Mohota later admitted, ‘’I have never been so consistent.I was very calm throughout the tournament and I never panicked. I was in the zone, you can say.’’
A relieved Nisha also said, “Bad days are over for me. From here on, I can only climb up”. Nisha has now set her sight on the National Premier Chess Championship which is scheduled to be held in October. Here’s wishing her all the luck for her future events!
