The Bharat (Indian) contingent bagged a whopping 173 medals at the recently held Los Angeles Special Olympic Games. The tally included 47 gold, 54 silver and 72 bronze medals. This is India’s second most successful medal haul at the Special Olympics.
The athletes competed across 14 disciplines in the nine-day event at Los Angeles. It was India’s athletics team that lead from the front with a haul of 47 medals including 17 gold. They also clinched the gold medal on their soft-ball debut.
Apart from the track and field athletes, the Indian roller-skaters also won a big chunk of the medals for the country at the Special Olympics. They secured 39 medals which included 10 gold.

India finished at the third place behind leaders and hosts United States of America and China in the overall medal count. The LA edition of the Special Olympics featured 177 countries and over 6500 athletes.
India’s 173 medals in 13 sporting events is a feat that is even more impressive when one looks closer at the infrastructure and outlook towards both disability and sports in India. Sports Rediscovered salutes the spirit of the Indian contingent that made the nation proud at the Special Olympics.
