August 7,2015 marked the 83rd birth anniversary of Ethiopian double Olympic marathon champion Abebe Bikila, famous for winning gold medal in 1960 Rome Summer Olympics in marathon, which he ran barefoot.
Bikila was included in the 1960 Ethiopian Summer Olympics team at the last moment in place of Wami Biratu who fell seriously ill. The shoe sponsor Adidas had only a few shoes left for Abebe Bikila to try out and as none of them fit him comfortably, he decided to run the marathon barefoot. Abebe Bikila went on to win the marathon gold medal in 1964 Tokyo Olympic in a new Olympic record time of 2:12:11.2.He became the first athlete in history to win the Olympic marathon twice.
Abebe Bikila Stadium, a multi-purpose stadium with a capacity of 30,000 spectators, is named in his honor in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
