After a disappointing start to its Spain tour, the Indian hockey team bounced back with vengeance in the second match to go level in the series. In a close battle between the two teams, the final score read 2-0 in favour of the visitors. Indian forwards Akashdeep and Ramandeep scored the goals for India.
The Indian hockey team put-up a convincing display against the hosts from the first minute. The blues had clearly learnt their lessons from the previous match, and avoided conceding goals.
Both teams began with an attacking mindset, knowing the first goal will be crucial. India’s SV Sunil and Akashdeep exchanged good passes to create scoring opportunities in the first quarter, but to their dismay Spain goalkeeper stood like a wall in front of the net. Thus, the first quarter of the game ended at nil each.
Inaugural Goal by Ramandeep:
India’s Ramandeep Singh drew first blood by scoring a brilliant field goal in the second quarter to earn the lead. The Indian team kept on evolving through the game and the third quarter witnessed sharper passing and lots of chance creation for the attackers. Akashdeep Singh converted a brilliant pass from Ramandeep Singh to advance the lead to 2-0.
The final quarter saw India dominate the possession as they continued to impress with their sticks. However, Spain managed to cut-loose and win a penalty corner. Unfortunately for the home supporters, Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh (nominated for the Arjuna Award) made a brilliant save.
And, the final score read 2-0 in favour of the Indian hockey team.
Indian hockey team will play their third and decisive match against Spain tomorrow (August 13) at Terrassa.
