Mangal Singh Champia and Deepika Kumari made it to the finals of the Archery world Cup stage-3 , beating second seeded pair of Jean-Charles Valladont and Sophie Planeix 5-3.
The duo have been drawn against the dark horse of the tournament, the Mexican pair of Juan Rene Serrano and Aida Roman, in the final event on Sunday.
Deepika Kumari and Champia survive a scare in the quarters
Deepika Kumari had helped the Indian recurve team already earn an Olympic quota and hence will be comparatively at ease while taking on the lower ranked Mexicans. The two Indians however, had to sweat it out in the quarters against Spain, finally managing to beat the Spanish pair, 5-4 in the shoot-offs.
In the group stages of the recurve contest, Deepika finished second, with a total of 658 points. Bombalaya Devi and Rimil Buriuly finished with 645 and 630 points respectively.
Mangal Singh Champia, in the qualifications round, finished twelfth with 663 points. He was followed in the 15th place by Bulbul Marandi with 661 points. Rahul Banerjee managed 657 points, finishing ahead of compatriot Jayata Talukdar, who carded 656 points.
So Deepika Kumari continues her glowing form this year. As per recent media reports she is now more comfortable facing high winds as well. Surely Deepika Kumari has the stuff to handle the high winds of,competition and it is only a matter of time before this form is converted into an Olympic medal.
