Indians will celebrate Independence Day on August 15. The entire nation will feel patriotism flow through their veins on the day and this is a good time to look back at some post-Independence moments from Indian sports. #1 India wins the World Cup (1983)
India went into the 1983 Cricket world cup as 1-66 underdogs. However, they came out as champions. India, led by Kapil Dev conquered the mighty West Indies in the final and came home with the World Cup.
#2 The year of Lee-Hesh (1999)
The team of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi made a name for themselves in 1999. The pairing reached the finals of all four Grand Slams in the Calendar and went on to win two Grand Slam men’s doubles titles.
#3 Viswanathan Anand crowned World Chess Champion (2000)
2000 saw the rise of Viswanathan Anand. At the World Chess Championship held in Tehran, Iran, Viswanathan Anand defeated Alexei Shirov of Spain to become the World Champion.
#4 India’s First Individual Olympic Gold (2008)
India came home with their first individual Olympic gold thanks to Abhinav Bindra. The Indian shooter snatched gold in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
#5 Cricket World Cup win again in 2011
Sachin Tendulkar had achieved almost everything in his career by 2011. The only thing missing from his trophy cabinet was the World Cup. This problem ended when India won the World Cup in 2011 and during the celebration, the team members lifted Sachin Tendulkar and gave him a lap of honor.
