Indian boxer Saweety Boora was up against home favourite Yang Xiaoli in the finals of the Asian Women’s Boxing championship. Saweety had just one objective in mind, to win the gold. Up against the boxer who stood between Saweety Boora and the gold medal at the women’s world boxing, the Indian was filled with vengeance. Unfortunately, the winds were not favourable.
Trying every trick in the book, Saweety failed to dictate terms in the ring. Saweety Boora fought with heart, but the Chinese used her height as an advantage, managing to slip through the dangerous jabs and punches of the Indian. Yang also displayed confident and effective shots apart from brilliant evasive techniques to dazzle the spectators who had come all the way to support her.
Yang used the ring effectively to beat India’s lone finalist with footwork but Saweety tried to overcome by attacking her opponent further and reduce the fighting range. However, Saweety Boora could not accomplish it.
The Haryana girl was visibly unsatisfied by her performance, and she stated, “Finishing runner-up has given me the motivation to do better next time. I’ll continue to work hard and would definitely like to go one better next time.“
And, so we would hope.
Saweety Boora will next target the Olympic qualifiers in February.
