Tennis – After losing a heart-breaking tie to Serbia this past weekend, India’s Davis Cup team have learnt that they will have to play only one tie to get to the Davis Cup World Group play-offs in 2015, as compared to the two ties they had to play this year before they earned a shot at Serbia.
As per the Davis Cup draw released yesterday by the International Tennis Federation, India have been seeded in the Asia/Oceania Group I and have a bye in the first round. They will meet either New Zealand or Taipei in the July tie. Those two countries will face off in the first round in March.
If India manages to beat the winner of that tie, they will get back into the play-offs with a tie against one of the eight first-round losers in the Davis Cup World Group in 2015.
India were beaten 2-3 by Serbia this weekend in Bangalore, after nearly pulling off an improbable comeback win. After losing the first two singles rubbers on Friday, India’s doubles duo of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna were down two sets to love and a break in the third set before chest-bumping their way back to a five-set win. Somdev Devvarman leveled the tie at 2-2 after another five-set win in Sunday’s first reverse singles but Yuki Bhambri was unable to hold his own against Filip Krajinovc in the final rubber, going down in straight sets.
