Indian Wrestling talent Ravi Kumar won a silver medal (55 kg freestyle) at a recently concluded World Junior Wrestling tournament for held in Brazil.
Ravi Kumar started off in a spectacular fashion by making a comeback despite trailing by 2-8 to win his opening round match comfortably. He was to repeat the feat by coming back from a similar deficit in the semi final. However this spell of wins by Ravi Kumar was cut-short by Azerbaijan’s Mahir Amiraslanov, who comprehensively defeated the Indian in the final bout to win the gold.
“It feels good to win a silver medal at the end, but that was not the goal of this tournament for me- the goal was to come out with a gold medal,” said Ravi.
Indian Wrestling – Signs for the future
The silver by Asian Champion, Ravi Kumar is a good sign for the future , though surely the WFI (Wrestling federation of India) would be looking for a better performance.
The WFI head has this to say about Ravi
“I would like to congratulate Ravi Kumar on his well-deserved win. All the hard work and efforts put in prior the tournament helped Ravi perform his best in the Junior World Championship and bring laurels to the country.”
The tournament in Brazil probably did not go as was thought by the federation and coaches, with just one medal being garnered. The country will now be hopeful for an improved medal tally for the seniors at the World Wrestling
