Sri Lanka v India 3rd Test: Hosts Strike Twice Before Rains

Not more than 15 overs of play was possible on Day 1 of the 3rd Test between India and Sri Lanka, at Colombo. Heavy rains put paid to all our hopes of seeing an exciting contest between the two teams, that are tied 1-1 in the Test series. The Sri Lankan captain’s decision to field first, after winning the toss, worked well as the hosts managed to get the wickets of Lokesh Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane within the first four overs.

Heavy rains cut short the day’s play at Colombo (SSC)

Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara steadied the Indian ship which, after Rahane’s departure, was left tottering at 14/2. The captain, along with today’s opening batsman for India Pujara, moved along nicely through the first session of play with a reassuring 36 run stand. Rains came pouring down forty minutes before lunch, and muddied the prospects of further play in the day. With wet conditions all around the field, and the steady drizzle refusing to go away, the umpires finally decided to call off the day’s play at 3.50 PM local time.
