There is great news for Indian boxing fans from the Asian Boxing Championships today. Three of India’s pugilists have booked their semi-final berths and thereby assured themselves of three medals at the Championships. But the best news is that they have received berths for the World Championships at Doha!
That also means that these Indian boxers will fight for an Olympic berth at Doha.
Devendro Singh qualifies for Semis at Asian Boxing Championships
In his quarterfinal bout at the Asian Boxing Championships, Devendro Singh faced Cornelis Kwangu Langu from Indonesia. The silver medallist from the previous edition broke the Indonesian’s defense through his uppercuts, before taking points by his jabs and hooks.
Devendro upped the tempo for his colleagues Shiva Thapa, Vikas Krishnan, Manoj Kumar and Manpreet Singh who had their respective quarter final bouts scheduled for the evening session.
Shiva Thapa and Vikas Krishnan Reach Semis
Vikas Krishnan had a perfect finish like Devendro, winning his bout 3-0 against Vietnam’s Dinh Hoang Truong as he eased past to the semis. However, Shiva Thapa met with hardship during his bout against Omurbek Malabekov of Kyrgystan. The bout had to be stopped in between due an injury suffered by Malabekov in the second round.
Manoj Kumar and Manpreet Singh were a bit unlucky today, failing to qualify for the semis. However, the two would be cheering for their respective rivals during the upcoming stages of the tournament, as their qualification to the finals could hand the two Indians a spot at the World Championships.
Indian boxer’s Madan Lal, Kuldeep Singh and Satish Kumar will play their quarter-final bouts of the Asian Boxing Championships and hope to add themselves to the Indian contingent traveling to Doha for the World Championships.
