The morning session packed a bit of a surprise with the defeat of men’s doubles top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan as well as the second seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in the first round of the competition.
The evening session was smooth as both the seeded participants Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams cruised to the third round in their respective competitions.
Comfortable victory for Novak Djokovic
In the second round Novak Djokovic was up against Austria’s Andreas Haider-Maurer and as expected from the top seed, he won in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2. The match lasted for just over an hour and a half.
The Austrian managed to give some competition to Djokovic during the opening set of the match taking it to 6-4. However, he could not continue to improve through the match and it was an easy outing for the top seed from Serbia.
On the other hand, Venus Williams played through a difficult match against fellow country-woman Irina Falconi. Venus took the first set comfortably at 6-3 and just as it would have seemed Venus had the upper hand, Falconi managed to bounce back in the second set taking it to a tie break at 6-6 and took the set away.
Down to the wire in the third set, Venus dominated the game with three aces, seven winners and a spectacular display at the net to qualify for the third round. Venus won the match 6-3, 6-7 (7-2) and 6-2.
