The fourth day of the US Open 2015 was great for the Indian players, with Leander Paes and Sania Mirza getting through to the second round in their respective doubles competition. However, it was not such a good day for women’s fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki, as she suffered a defeat at the Arthur Ashe stadium against unseeded Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic.
Straight set victories for both Indians at the US Open
Leander Paes partnered Spain’s hard-hitting Fernando Verdasco in the men’s doubles, the pair played Germany’s Florian Mayer and Frank Moser, winning the match at just over the one hour mark. The final score ended at 6-2 and 6-3 for the Indo-Spaniard pair.
On the other hand, Wimbledon winners Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis began their quest rather comfortably against American pair of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria. The match lasted less than an hour and resulted in a 6-1 and 6-2 win for the Hingis-Mirza pair.
Federer adavnces, Wozniacki upset
The evening session of the competition saw men’s second seed Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki in action. It turned out to be a good outing for Federer as he defeated Steve Darcis of Belgium with relative ease, taking the sets 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1.
The grandslam this year has been witness to some major calamity on each game day. Today’s victim was Caroline Wozniacki who was taken by surprise by the persistence of Czech Republic’s Petra Cetkovska, causing yet another upset in the tournament. Cetkovska took the first set 6-4, putting the fourth seed under immense pressure. Bouncing back from the defeat Wozniacki won the second set, but in a hardly convincing manner, and eventually taking it to the tie break in the final set.
Wozniacki had her chances and could not capitalize on them and Cetkovska punished her in the tie break taking the match 6-4, 5-7 and 7-6 (7-1).
