The first session of US Open day five saw big guns like Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Marin Cilic secure wins in their respective matches.
Serena needed three sets to wrap up the match against fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Sands managed to win the first set 3-6 but Serena came back strong in the next two sets and took the match home with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. Elsewhere, top seed Novak Djokovic also made it to the next round after defeating 25th-seeded Andreas Seppi 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. Djokovic is one of the favourites to win the US Open this year and has been in imperious form.
Cilic progresses at US Open
Defending champion Marin Cilic needed five sets to defeat 56th-ranked Mikhail Kukushkin. In a match that lasted 4 hours and 11 minutes, Cilic won with a score of 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1.
Venus Williams came out with a solid win in the third round of the tournament when she defeated 12th seed Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4. It was a great performance from the American and there were shades of her prime, in this match. Eugenie Bouchard was the other big winner of the day as she won against Dominika Cibulkova with a score of 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3.
