World Wrestling Championship: Memorable Indian Wins

The latest edition of the World Wrestling Championship will witness top wrestlers from all across the world in action. Indian wrestlers are all set to make their mark at the event this year. But before we get immersed into the tournament, here is a look at some of the memorable performances by Indian wrestlers at the championship.

Alka Tomar wins Bronze (2006)

2006 saw India win a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championship. And it was all due to Alka Tomar. She won the Bronze in 59kg freestyle category for women and produced an outstanding performance which we still remember.

Ramesh Kumar wins Bronze (2009)

Three years after the triumph of Alka Tomar, India won another medal at the World Wrestling Championship. This time, it was in the men’s category. Ramesh Kumar won the Bronze medal in the 74kg Men’s freestyle event and broke India’s jinx.

Sushil Kumar Strikes Gold (2010)

Sushil Kumar made history at the 2010 Wrestling championship when he won Gold in the 66kg freestyle category. It was a momentous occasion for India, which Sushil Kumar achieved  by defeating Alan Gogayev of Russia in the final.

Double Delight for women (2012)

In 2012, a female championship was held rather than a full-fledged event since it was an Olympic year. India won two medals at the event when Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat won bronze in the 51kg and 55kg category of freestyle wrestling respectively.

Amit Kumar gets silver (2013)

2013 proved to be fruitful for India when we won two bronze medals and one silver medal. The silver came through Amit Kumar, who won it in the 55kg Men’s freestyle category. Bajrang Kumar and Sandeep Tulsi Yadav brought home the bronze medals as well.
