The morning session of the fifth day at the US Open resulted in victories for Novak Djokovic, Serena and Venus Williams. Rohan Bopanna was only Indian to win his mixed doubles fixture on day five.
Rafael Nadal continues disappointing run
No viewer would have ever expected the result. Nadal was quick to grab the opening two sets in under 45 minutes each and it seemed like a comfortable victory for the Spaniard at that moment. However, Italy’s Fabio Fognini had other plans, as he took the third set 6-4 sparking a comeback from 2-0 down after the opening two sets.
The third set victory too went the way for the Italian as he won the next two sets, causing one of the biggest upsets in the tournament so far. The Italian beat Rafael Nadal 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4 in a critical five set thriller.
Paes and Sania knocked out
Leander Paes and Fernando Verdasco pair received tough competition from Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson in their second round. After an opening round victory over top seeds Bryan brothers, Querrey and Johnson proved too good for the Indo-Spanish pairing. Leander-Verdasco managed to offer tough competition to the American pair that resulted in a 7-5, 6-3 and 6-4 win for the American.
On the other hand, top seeds Sania Mirza and Bruno Soares were knocked out of the mixed doubles competition in another upset this year. The pair of Andrea Hlavackova and Lukasz Kubot defeated the Indo-Brazilian duo in straight sets 6-3 and 6-3.
Indians in action on day 6
Rohan Bopanna and partner Yung-Jan Chan will play Alexander Peya and Alla Kudryavtseva in the second round of mixed doubles, while Bopanna will also play his men’s doubles on the day. Leander Paes and Martina Hingis will play Eugenie Bouchard and Nick Kyrogis in their second round. The Sania Mirza – Martina Hingis pair will also be in action.
Top players Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep will be in action at the Arthur Ashe stadium.
