The 2015 edition of Asian Boxing Championship proved fruitful for India as the nation came out with a silver and three bronze medals.
At the start of the tournament, six Indian boxers got a bye in the first round. Olympic berths were up for grabs and the boxers had their eyes set on them. Shiva Thapa, Devendro Singh, Satish Kumar, Manpreet Singh and Vikas Krishan reached the quarterfinals and it proved to be a big boost for everyone.
However, the boxers were met with some tough competition in the Quarterfinals stage of the championship. Devendro Singh progressed easily into the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over his opponent Cornelis Kwangu Langu of Indonesia. Shiva Thapa and Vikas Krishan also made it to the semis on the same day by winning their respective matches.
Satish Kumar then earned his spot in the final four and raised the number of Indians in the semi-finals to four.
Vikas Krishan goes on to clinch silver at Asian Boxing Championship
Of the four Indians who competed in the Semi-finals, only Vikas Krishan managed to make it into the finals. He set up a bout with Bektemir Melikuziev of Uzbekistan in the final, but was unlucky to lose 0-2. The silver proved to be a big encouragement for the boxer nevertheless.
