Defending Champion Marin Cilic reached the semi-finals of the 2015 US Open after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Quarter final of the tournament.
Cilic seemed to be on top of his game after taking the first two sets comfortably but Tsonga was in no mood to give up. He fought back and took home the next two sets making the last set crucial. Cilic, however, held his nerve and came out with a 6-4 win in the last set to clinch the match. The final score read 6-4 6-4 3-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 after three hours and 58 minutes.
Cilic has been involved in long matches throughout the tournament and he would have to be concerned about fatigue as he makes hia way into the semi-finals.
“That was a big mental fight after that fourth set. It got physical towards the end. It was very hot,” said Cilic. He will now face either Novak Djokovic or Feliciano Lopez in the Semis.
Roberta Vinci cruises into US Open Semis
Italy’s Roberta Vinci made it to her first Grand Slam semi-finals after she defeated France’s Kristina Mladenovic in the quarter finals. Ranked 43 in the world, Vinci won the match with a score line of 6-3 5-7 6-4. Vinci will have a tough task in her hand in the semis as she will face either Serena Williams or Venus Williams.
