Geeta Phogat, who competed in the 58kg category, was drawn against World Champion Kaori Icho in the first round of qualifying. She had a good start and did not allow Icho to get any clear opening in the first minute. She managed to get Icho locked as well but the Japanese wrestler broke out of it. Icho then gained 10 points with a double-leg attack and ended the match with a technical superiority win.
Geeta Phogat Misses out on Bronze
As Icho went on to reach the finals of the Championship, Geeta was handed a golden opportunity to win the bronze medal through Repechage round. She faced Elif Yesilirmak of Turkey in the Repechage round and ended up losing 10-0.
Lalitha and Nikki, who were the other Indians in action at the championship also crashed out in the pre-quarters against respective Japanese Opponents.
“It was always going to be a difficult bout. She is one of the best wrestlers in the world. I tried my best to wrestle according to the tactics I had planned, but it did not work as she was too fast with her double-leg attack and did not really give me any time to recover,” Geeta said after the repechage on Thursday.
