Floyd Mayweather retired from professional boxing with a perfect record of 49-0 after defeating Andre Berto in his last match.
Mayweather got the upper hand in the initial rounds with his great reflexes and jabs. He then toyed with Berto in the next few rounds before Berto finally found an opening in the fifth Berto landed a vicious jab in the round and it resulted in a heated situation between the two. Berto built around this advantage and came up with excellent performances in sixth and seventh rounds. Mayweather responded with his usual escape artiste route in the eight and ninth rounds but Berto once again got the upper hand in the tenth.
Mayweather showed why he is champion in the next two rounds, which also happened to be the last two of his career. The judges scored 117-111, 118-110, 120-108 in favour of Mayweather.
Floyd Mayweather ties with Rocky Marciano
With his win against Berto, Mayweather tied with boxing legend Rocky Marciano who also finished undefeated with the same record. The 38-year old Mayweather announced that he had nothing more to achieve and confirmed his retirement from the sport.
“I’ve been in the sport of boxing my whole life and they say I’m wrong for saying I’m the best. Every champion – [Muhammad] Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes – the list goes on and on. They opened up the doors and paved the way for where I am today and I’m appreciative. But now the young fighters say, ‘We want to be like Mayweather.’ It’s not cool to take punishment in the ring. I’m not perfect but I strived to be a perfectionist,” Mayweather said.
He added that he has nothing left to prove.
“My career is over. It’s official. I’m financially secure and I’m in good health. You’ve got to know when it’s time to hang it up, so I think it’s about time for me to hang it up. I’m close to 40 years old, I’ve been in this sport 19 years, been world champion for 18 years, I’ve broken all records. There’s nothing left to prove in the sport of boxing,” he added.
