Davis Cup might not be as celebrated as the Grand Slam tournaments that take place through the calendar, but it is one of the rare occasions where a tennis player can proudly represent his country and reap glory. Nightmare for Wimbledon Champions
In 1966, India reached their first Davis Cup Final. The team which consisted of Ramanathan Krishnan, Premjit Lal, SP Misra and Jaidip Mukherjea had some memorable win and in the final, Krishnan and Mukerjea faced Wimbledon champions New Combe and Tony Roche. Although they lost the match, it was a hard fought battle and a proud moment for Indians.
Vijay and Anand Amritraj repeat history
Eight years after their first final, India repeated the history in 1974. This time, the team was spearheaded by Vijay and Anand Amritraj. They were favorites to win the title, but the Indian team refused to face South Africa in the final due to the country’s stand on Apartheid.
50 Wins for Ramanathan Krishnan
Ramanathan Krishnan was a regular player in the Davis Cup for India for almost two decades. He is also the most successful Singles player in the tournament for the nation piling up a record of 50 wins and 19 loses. Ramanathan has another 19 wins in doubles to just 9 losses.
Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi produce great numbers
While Ramanathan could be termed as the most successful Singles player, the best doubles pairing for India in Davis Cup has been Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. The duo played in 27 Davis Cup doubles match and won 25 of them.
