India’s hopes of securing a place in the World Groups were put to an end by Czech Republic when the latter came out winning the comtest 3-1.
Somdev Devvarman gave India a strong start in the first rubber when he defeated Jiri Vesely. Devvarman, who showcased some great tennis throughout the match surprised everyone when he came out winning against the World No. 40, Vesely. The final score of the match read 7-6,6-4, 6-3.
Second Loss in Davis Cup For Leander Paes
India failed to capitalize on Somdev’s win as the doubles pairing of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna suffered defeat against the Czech pairing of Radek Stephanek and Adam Pavlasek. It was only the second double defeat in 15 years for Leander Paes in the Davis Cup. They came into the match as the favorites but were brushed aside by the opposition and the match ended in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.
Yuki Bhambri, on the other hand, could not get a win under his name. He faced Lukas Rosol and failed to help India launch a fight back. Bhambri faced off against Vesely in the fourth and most crucial rubber with the score at 2-1 in favor of Czech.
It was a must win rubber for the Indian team but Yuki once again struggled to keep up with his opponent. The match ended 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 in favor of Vesely, which in turn gave Czech Republic a 3-1 win over the Indians. The teams decided not to play the final rubber between Somdev and Rosol.
