Incheon: After the men’s hockey team scripted a convincing 8-0 win against Sri Lanka, it was the Indian women’s turn to keep up the good work. They did exactly the same as they convincingly defeated Thiland 3-0 in their first Pool A game of the women’s hockey competition at the Asian Games.
Goals from Poonam Rani, Vandana Katariya and Deepika helped the scorecard as India successfully opened their campaign.
The Thai defense showed great promise in the first quarter. In the dying minutes of the first half, India was awarded a penalty corner. Poonam Rani was placed at the scoring position comfortably and pushed the ball to perfection and gave her team a 1-0 lead. The second quarter went goaalless but India went on initiating rapid counterattacks. The chief striker Rani didn’t have luck on her side as none of her 6 shots on target could go past the keeper.
The second goal for India came in the third quarter when Vandana Katariya went through a puzzled Thai defense and scored a brilliant field goal. Defensive midfielder and vice-captain Deepika then sealed the game for India with another penalty corner in the 53rd minute in the 4th quarter.
The Indian Women Hockey team play their next match against China on Wednesday. The Chinese Women defeated the Malaysians 1-0 in their opening game and would be considered favorites for that tie.
