A fantastic performance against top seed Egyptian Marwan Elshorbagy saw home favourite Saurav Ghosal comfortably win the JSW Indian Squash Circuit Kolkata International. Up against a higher ranked opponent, Ghosal took the fight to the opposition right from the first serve. His Egyptian counterpart fumbled to keep pace with him, as Ghosal ultimately won the contest in less than an hour. The final scoreline read 11-7, 11-2, 11-7.
Saurav Ghosal strikes gold from the word GO
The Indian gained early advantage in the first game, with a couple of killer strokes. In the next two rounds, he consolidate his early gains by making it difficult for his opponent to come up with effective shots. Elshorbagy, however, did manage to make Ghosal work hard with his lengths later on. But he could not sustain the pressure for any appreciable amount of time. Unable to get a grip on Saurav Ghosal, who was charged up by the emphatic crowd support, the Egyptian floundered every now and then as the match went on. This made it easy for Ghosal to wind up the contest within an hour.
In his post-match comments, Ghosal said, “I’m obviously extremely happy to win a USD 35000 final after being in the finals in two months. Doing it in my own club, in my own city is extra special. Beating two top-15 players, Stephen in the semi-final and Marwan in the final, is something I can be proud of. Thanks to sponsors JSW, Reliance, and the club and the organisers for making it a great event for PSA players”.
