FC Goa were looking to hand a third consecutive defeat to the visiting Chennaiyin FC, but Materazzi’s men pulled a stunner of a victory courtesy Stiven Mendoza. Mendoza struck the season’s first hat-trick and what a timing. Just what the doctor would have ordered for Chennaiyin in order to fire up a comeback after two disappointing losses.
Stiven Mendoza strikes early for the visitors
Following the trend of early goals this season, Chennaiyin FC striker Mendoza got to the scoring chart in the 10th minute of the game from an Elano through ball. Mendoza’s first strike was blocked by the Goa keeper, but couldn’t hold on to it as Mendoza took advantage and put it in the net to open the scoring.
With the lead at hand, Chennaiyin dropped a bit of aggression from their game that dominated the play for the initial quarter of the game. FC Goa received its first chance of scoring and they almost had it from Keenan Almeida, who beautifully received a Leo Moura pass and helped it past the charging Chennaiyin goalkeeper. However, the attempt did not succeed as Rane traced back to clear the ball.
A lost chance of scoring put the Goan side on the back-foot again as Chennaiyin FC continued to dominate play without facing much hardship from Zico’s men. The Goans did not charge on the ball or pressurised Chennaiyin to gain control, they simply played spectators as the visiting midfielders displayed their prowess on the ball.
Coming close to the half time, Chennaiyin attacked the Goa net and succeeded in extending the attack to 2-0 as Elano got himself on the scorecard.
Looking at the weak performance by Zico’s men tonight, perhaps it is time he opts to rotate players to keep energy high.
Stiven Mendoza stretchered off, And the hat-trick
At the end of the first-half, Romeo Fernandez tackled Mendoza resulting in the Colombian being stretchered away. However, Mendoza determined to continue returned to the pitch in the second half.
The Colombian continued his threatening runs throughout the second half and added two more goals to his name (63′, 75′) to complete the first hat-trick of the ISL season 2. This hat-trick also puts Stiven Mendoza on top of the goal scorers table ahead of Tuncay Sanli and Helder Postiga.
