Mumbai City FC hosted Chennaiyin FC at the DY Patil stadium. The hosts hoped for some salvation to their season. But, Stiven Mendoza had other plans for the hosts. Mendoza kept up his goal-scoring form by striking a brace against Anelka’s boys.
Chhetri, Norde fail to rescue Mumbai
Mumbai City FC received a boost to their attack with the return of India captain Sunil Chhetri to their line-up after the World Cup Qualifiers. In spite of the return, Mumbai City FC faced a tough time attacking Materazzi’s defense. Chennaiyin FC took the first genuine scoring chance as Mendoza struck a fierce shot that was sent out wide by the Mumbai goalkeeper Subrata Pal in the first half.
Few minutes later, Pal came to the rescue for his team with a finger tip save that guided the ball away from the upright and clear of the goal.
The last Mumbai attack of the half was setup by a Piquionne through ball for Sony Norde in the final minutes of the half. Norde’s shot got blocked as a desperate tackle from Wadoo came to the rescue of Mumbai.
Mendoza brace takes Chennaiyin FC to third spot
15 minutes into the second half, Chennaiyin striker Stiven Mendoza broke the deadlock winning the lead for the visitors. Mendoza doubled the lead in the 66th minute after he poached a rebound of the crossbar from Jayesh Rane.
Mendoza’s double puts him clear on the top scorers chart with five goals.
The game ended with three deserving points for the visiting side that takes them to the third spot on the table. While, Mumbai City FC having garnered just one point from their four matches, keeps them on the seventh spot.
