Indian Hoopsters Beaten 46-71 by Iran, Medal Hopes Dashed

The second group E match of the men’s basketball competition between India and Iran turned out to be a one-sided game as the Iranians proved to be too good for the Indian players, winning the game 76-41. India’s chances of winning a medal are also over with this defeat.

Amritpal Singh, the Indian skipper was the only bright spot for the Indians as he scored 10 points

Amritpal Singh(10) and Vishesh Bhriguvanshi(9) combined to score 19 points for India. Nik Khabahrami, the Iranian captain was the standout performer of the match with 16 points. He was well supported by fellow teammate H Ehdadi.

Both the teams began the game strongly but Iran held the upper hand as they maintained the pressure on the Indians with a 6 point lead in the first 10 minutes. Here onwards, Iran took the game away as the scores in the second, third and fourth quarters read 16-12, 20-8 and 18-5 respectively. In terms of points scored from the paint, Iran led by 26 points(44-18). From turnovers, the Indian team scored 14 points while their opponents managed to net 20 points.

India has been knocked out of the competition after this loss as only the first two teams from each group advance.

While the Indian hoopsters displayed some promising performances in continuation with their efforts at the Asia Cup earlier, results could not come their way and a slow start against Philippines in the previous match being a key factor in their ouster.
