India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta became the only qualifier from the country at the Table Tennis World Cup this year held at Halmstad, Sweden. Achanta was drawn into the fourth qualifying group along with Robert Gardos and Anton Kallberg. The top two from each group were to advance to the round of 16 at the World Cup.
Sharath Kamal Achanta loses both his group matches
Achanta’s bid at the World Cup has been cut-short by superb performances by his opponents Gardos and Kallberg. Achanta lost both his games and failed to advance to the round of 16 in Sweden.
The Indian first came up against an in-form Robert Gardos who took down the host player Anton Kallberg in the opening group fixture 4-0. Gardos continued his perfect winning run against the Achanta with another 4-0 win ensuring his place at the top of the group.
Now the tie against Anton Kallberg became a do or die match for the Indian. But the Swede had other plans and quickly took the first set 5-11 and stopped the Indian from making any comeback. Kallberg dominated the rest of the sets winning 6-11, 1-11, 8-11 to make it 4-0.
The elimination from the World Cup was disappointing for Sharath as he lost to lower ranked players but surely the talismanic Indian paddler will make a comeback.
