HS Prannoy, who is unseeded in the tournament produced the biggest upset of the first day when he defeated the reigning Olympic Champion Lin Dan of China. The two Asians were engaged in a tough three game battle which, at the end of the day went in favor of Prannoy for a score of 14-21, 21-11, 21-17.

Elsewhere, top seed Saina Nehwal defeated Michelle Li of Canada in a comfortable two game match. Saina took the match with a score of 21-18,21-13 after a time of 42 minutes. Kashyap, on the other hand, defeated Thomas Rouxel with a score of 21-11, 22-20 to make it into the second round of the tournament.

The pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa defeated Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai by a score of 21-15, 21-12 to reach the second round as well. Kidambi Srikanth, however, failed to clear the hurdle as he was defeated by World No. 10 Tian Houwei with a score of 15-21,21-13,11-21. This was Srikanth’s fourth loss against the Chinese player this season and it is something he will have to look into.However today belonged to HS Prannoy who continued the string of good results for Indian badminton players with this big upset over Lin Dan.
