The match opened to a tightly contested first half. Both teams had quality possession though only one team had the goals to show off. The pairing of Elano and Stevin Mendoza was causing headaches for Pune early on while Nicky Shorey and Didier Zokora did the honor for Pune.

There were plenty of chances created in the thirty minutes but Chennaiyin had the better one. A beautiful long throw from Dhanachandra Singh was headed in perfectly by Bernard Mendy in the 33rd minute and this shifted the game in Chennai’s favor. Pune won set piece after set piece in the post-goal period but nothing materialized for them before the half-time whistle.

Chennaiyin FC kills takes a winning lead in the second half

Pune started the second half strongly when Tuncay Sanli forced a save from Karanjit. However, it was Chennai that once again drew blood. An assist from Elano allowed Mendoza to score in the 48th minute and this provided Chennai with a two goal cushion. This was the fifth goal for Mendoza in as many matches and he is currently the top scorer in the league.

The goal killed off the game to an extent but Elano was in no mood to rest. His crosses were breaking down the Pune defense even as Mendy was pulling strings in the Chennai defense to keep the Pune attackers away.  David Platt introduced Adrian Mutu in the 71st minute in place of Tuncay Sanli. Just minutes later, Pune scored one back through Kalu Uche. He picked up a miscued shot from Eugeneson Lyngdoh in the 74th minute and this made the match come alive again. Mutu was instrumental in creating a handful of chances for Pune but none of them helped the Pune team to draw level. The game came to an end but not before Adrian Mutu tried an expansive overhead kick, which also went wide.

Chennai will be happy with their win after what happened against North East United while Pune will be looking to bounce back in the next game.
