India’s youngest gymnast Dipa Karmakar has consistently made India proud. This is another opportunity for the girl from Agartala as she becomes the first Indian to qualify for the finals of World Gymnastics Championships.
The 22 year old scored a total of 14.900 points to settle for the seventh spot in the qualifying rounds ahead of Mexico’s Alexa Moreno. The Mexican fetched 14.899 points.
Returning to Glasgow for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship after her success at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Dipa Karmakar put on a successful performance.
She put two risky manoeuvres for her points at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Glasgow. “I was very scared when she went for her second jump,” coach Nandi says, adding, “we only started out on this in August when I knew she could take the load of a second very difficult vault. It’s a risk as it is, and without enough repetitions, I’ll always be nervous. But she is brilliant. She was performing this for the first time in competition, but she did well.”
A medal could help Dipa Karmakar win Olympic berth
Dipa has her eyes on a medal at the championships as that could well pave her way for an Olympic berth at Rio next year.
