The short format of basketball saw some exciting matches thanks to the 2015 World Games and India proved to be one of the surprise packages in the tournament. The squad consisted of Akilan Pari, Vinay Kaushik, Arvind Arumugam and Gurvinder Singh Gill. The team managed to win both their games against Korea and Japan in the qualification and this set them up for a clash against Japan in the knockout stage.

Solid Show by India in 2015 World Games

The Indian team put-up a strong showing against Japan in the crucial match but the Japanese hung around and took home the game by a score of 13-21. Ironically, Japan went on to lose their next match against Canada by the same margin. Despite the loss, India finished a solid eight in the tournament and will be looking to build on the experience they earned.

“Barring Akilan, we are new to this format but still performed very well. We are happy to have made it to the knockout stages in our first attempt. If we familiarize ourselves with this version of the game, I’m sure we can become one of the top teams in Asia,” said Arumugam.

Gurvinder Singh Gill also had his say about the tournament.

“Personally, I have gained a lot in confidence and experience over the last two days, since 3×3 is a lot faster than traditional 5 on 5,” he said.
