Sports Stats Weekly: Sporting Upsets Caused By India

In this week’s edition of Sports Stats Weekly, we do not look at any individual sport. But a combination of sports where India has been successful in pulling a miraculous result. Many of you will have a long list of such events where India emerged victorious when the possibility seemed dim.

There have been numerous occasions in recent times when Indian players have performed stunningly and outwitted their better opponents. The performance of Joshana Chinappa in the Qatar Open Squash outwitting the top seed in the very first round is one such recent example.

Let us look at the incidents where India stunned the world in sports:

1983 World Cup

1983 World Cup

1983 Cricket World Cup Final

It may sound disappointing to many but India’s World Cup win was nothing short of miraculous against an in-form West Indies. West Indies had the advantage of winning the previous two editions of the Cricket World Cup and fearsome pace bowlers (best in the world at the time).

India scored a lowly 183 and everyone would have predicted for West Indies to lift their third World Cup in a row. But that was not to be. Indian bowling led by Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal made sure the Windies batsmen were brought down to their knees to register cricket’s biggest upset of the time.

Women’s Hockey Gold Medal in 1982 Asian Games

Another such story was the 1982 Asian Games where the women’s hockey team managed to win the gold medal. On the other hand, the men’s team succumbed to a defeat.

The results were completely unexpected. Hardly anyone would have predicted a loss for the men’s hockey team and rarely anyone would have predicted a gold medal finish for the women’s team.

1987 Davis Cup Semi Finals

India has enjoyed some success at the Davis Cup. But never have they managed to win it. During the 1987 Davis Cup, Indian team faced a tough battle in the semis against the dominating Australia. The Indian team won the tie, a completely unexpected result for the tennis fans across the world.
