Kerala Blasters are back to winning ways in the Indian Super League with a convincing win over Pune City on Wednesday.
First Win for Kerala Blasters Under New Coach
Kerala, who played under their new coach Terry Phelan, had a statement to make. They did just that throughout the game against table toppers Pune. Kerala dominated the possession in the early minutes and Sandesh Jhingan was soon presented with a glorious chance in the 13th minute. The Indian center back, however, failed to convert. This proved to be the story of the game for Kerala as they had a string of chances against the visiting team.
Chris Dagnall had a few in the first half with the most notable one coming in the 28th minute. Mohammed Rafi then had three quick shots on goal only to be kept away by the Pune defence. Kerala’s relentless attack finally paid off when Dagnall slotted in a close ranger in the 45th minute.
Although the temp slowed down a bit when the second half started, Kerala was still on front. Sanchez Watt looked lively in the second half and gave Blasters their second goal in the 60th minute. Pune showed no signs of a comeback afterwards when Kerala wasted chances to pile up the lead to a higher margin.
Tempers soon got out of the line in the 78th minute when Josu got tangled with Verhoek. Referee had to intervene to break up the players and the after effect of the battle was there to be seen post-match as well. Despite this, Kerala will be happy with the win and they will be looking to turn their season around with this.
