Indian starlet Siril Varma won a silver medal at the BWF World Junior Championship after losing in the final.
The 15-year old Siril was defeated by Chia Hung Lu of Chinese Taipei in the final with a score of 21-17 10-21 7-21. Siril did have his moments in the match when he picked up the lead a couple of times. However, he struggled to keep up in the crucial game and eventually lost out. Despite the loss, he will be happy with the silver he won as his tournament was eventful to say the least.
During his run to the finals of the BWF Junior World Championship final, the 15-year old defeated likes of Niels Veenstra of Netherlands, Thomas Baures of France, Kentaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand, Thailand’s Adulrach Namkul and many other big names.
Some of the top Indian players who won medals in the Junior World Championships before are Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, RMV Gurusaidutt, HS Prannoy and Sameer Verma. The medal win comes as a relief for Siril as he missed out at the Asian Junior U-17 and U-15 championships after being ruled over age by the doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, Delhi. The judgement was overruled by a subsequent examination at AIIMS.
