Chennaiyin FC kept their Semi-final hopes alive with a 4-1 win over Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League. It was a do or die game for both teams but it was Chennaiyin that rose to the occasion.
Kerala did have a chance to go ahead in the first minute when Cavin Lobo hit the woodwork. It was all Chennai after this chance. Chennaiyin took the lead in the 3rd minute through Dana and very soon the southern side were running through the narrow formation of Blasters. Stiven Mendoza’s pace was causing a lot of problems and he soon got on the score sheet in the 16th minute with a curling shot on the top corner.
Although Kerala was trying to find a way back into the match, Chennai stood their ground and didn’t allow the opposition to find a break.
Lights out for Kerala Blasters?
The second half did not bring any luck for the Blasters. Chennai was dominating throughout the match and Mendoza in particular was standing out. Terry Phelan did make a change in the tactics and replaced Peter Ramage with Bruno Perone in the defense. This, however, was not enough to turn the game around.
Mendoza struck in the 79th minute to make it 3-0 and just two minutes later, he struck again to complete his hatrick and make it 4-0. It was Mendoza’s ninth goal of the season and he is currently the top scorer of the Indian Super League. Kerala did find a consolation goal through Antonio German but it was too little and too late for a dramatic comeback.
