Hockey: India Win Third Test, But Lose Series On Penalty

In a thriller of a contest between India and Australia in the third and final hockey test, Akashdeep Singh’s goal won the game for the hosts. Rupinder Pal Singh and VR Raghunath also scored for India’s 3-2 win over the world champions.

Late goal seals it for India

With a win needed to save the team from losing the series, India began in an unfamiliar defensive note to stop the Aussies from scoring. India’s goalkeeper PR Sreejesh played a crucial role in maintaining the solid defence with some spectacular saves during the early half of the game. Finally, in the 17th minute India broke the deadlock with yet another goal from VR Raghunath, who converted the penalty corner.

India moved into halftime with the one goal lead.

Australia began with a fierce attack in the second half and drew level through Trent Mitton in the 36th minute. But desperate India took the lead back again in the 41st minute with Rupinder Pal Singh as the scorer. With India leading the game again, the Aussie attack only grew fierce but the Indian defense managed to keep the attacks under control till the 53rd minute. When, Trent Mitton scored another for the visitors.

With the scores level, the attacks from both sides kept growing cautiously. And when it almost seemed to end as a draw, Akashdeep Singh came out for the hosts with a goal in the final minute made sure the contest moved to penalty shoot-outs to decide the winner of the series. As the series ended in a tie with a win each by Australia and India.

However, India failed to make the most of the shoot-outs and lost the series on penalty.
