It was a fight between the top teams of the Hero Indian Super League 2015 for the coveted playoffs. But Roberto Carlos’ Delhi Dynamos earned three points to qualify for the semi-finals. Brazilian Gustavo dos Santos scored the winner to end the match 2-1 for the visitors.
Delhi Dynamos took the lead in the first half by virtue of a goal from Indian striker Robin Singh. Another Indian national, Seityasen Singh was NorthEast’s recourse to tie the game seven minutes later.
It was a hard fought game with the intensity writ large on the teams’ display. The home side needed to win both of their remaining games whereas Delhi had one foot already on the playoff berth. Consequently, it was NorthEast who pressed for the win, keeping the visitors at bay for most of the game.
Nevertheless, Delhi Dynamos, went ahead in the 30th minute, courtesy a defensive lapse from the NorthEast defence. It was a parry from TP Rehenesh as he failed to clear the free-kick from Florent Malouda. The ball was headed back into the action zone where the defenders could not see out the situation. This allowed Robin Singh to score the first goal from a close spot.
Soon after, the Indian striker had another chance, as he went on a one-on-one with Rehenesh. But Singh could not keep his composure and made a mess of the same. That was the best opportunity that he had throughout the game.
That miss saw the home team swing back into action with an impressive counter-attack, leading to the equalizer. It was another poor show at the defence as Delhi Dynamos’ full back Ralte Adinga failed to clear the ball. This resulted for Seityasen Singh to latch on to the loose ball, who made room to score past Toni Doblas.
Seityasen had another clear chance when he went off the mark after a long clearance found him at the edge of the Delhi Dynamos box. But he could not capitalize on the situation, which allowed Sehnaj Singh to close down his effort.
The match was headed for another draw until the introduction of Gustavo Dos Santos. His left-footed pile driver had brought out the best from Rehenesh. But two minutes from full time, he beat the goalie with his grounded longranger.
With this result, Delhi Dynamos have now moved to the second spot on the ISL table with 21 points from 12 matches. NorthEast United are placed fourth with 17 points but have only one game remaining against FC Pune City. It seems well over for the Highlanders, but maybe a flick of luck and they can retain their 4th spot till the end.
