Indian Badminton stars Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth suffered defeats on the first day of Dubai Super Series badminton tournament.
The tournament is the Round-robin format for the first round, sees top players from both the men category and women category. Saina faced off against Nozomi Okuhara in the first match up and could not withstand the Japanese challenge.
Okuhara, who is seeded fourth in the tournament, strolled across the unseeded Saina with a score of 21-14, 21-6 to win the match.
Kidambi Srikanth, on the other hand, lost out to Japanese star Kento Momota. The second-seeded Momota defeated Srikanth with a score of 21-13, 21-13.
Srikanth will have his hands full in the next match as he will be facing Viktor Axelson. It will be a must win game for Srikanth as a loss could knock him out of the tournament.
Saina finds herself in a similar situation when she faces top seed Carolina Marin in the next match. Carolina is expected to provide Saina a tough challenge and it would be a crucial match for the Indian. Marin comes into the match after a win against Tai Tzu Ying when Axelson enjoyed a win over Chou Tien Chen.
Kidambi Srikanth and Saina Nehwal are the only representatives of India in the Dubai Super series tournament.
