India’s chances of getting a Boxing medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics took an interesting turn as four Indian boxers became eligible for the Olympic Scholarships.
Shiva Thapa, Mandeep Jangra, Sumit Sangwan and Gaurav Bidhuri will receive $800 per month until August 2016 if they manage to Qualify for the Olympics. The Olympic Committee selected the four boxers after the recommendation from Indian Olympic Association.
Apart from the monthly grants, the Olympic Committee will also cover the $5000 plane tickets and other transportation costs of the boxers.
The news is indeed an encouraging one for the boxers and the fans alike. Shiva Thapa, has been enjoying a great run lately and is sitting pretty in the 3rd position of AIBA Bantamweight rankings. He is considered as one of India’s biggest hope for a boxing medal when the likes of Mandeep, Sumit and Bidhuri are not far behind.
Mandeep had won Silver in the Asian Championships and the Commonwealth Games when Sumit and Bidhuri have achievements in World Series to show off.
With Vijender Singh out of the fold, the fans will be eagerly waiting to see how the remaining boxers will perform when the pressure is on.
