Awadhe Warriors playing their last tie in front of home crowds made a disappointing start against the Bengaluru Top Guns. Losses in the mixed doubles and the men’s singles made them trail 2-0. But a brilliant display of fighting spirit in the final three matches of the night took the tie for the home team winning 4-1.
Poor start, Great finish for Awadhe Warriors
Bodin Issara and K Maneesha took to the court in the opening match of the tie against India’s best doubles player Ashwini Ponappa and Khim How. The match was definitely not going to be easy for the home side as it went to the decider but Ponappa and How were desperate to make it count for the Top Guns and they did. Top Guns defeated the Warriors in the first match 15-13, 11-15, 15-13. The second match of the night followed the tide and the Top Guns took a 2-0 lead as Sameer Verma pulled a miracle defeating B Sai Praneeth 15-13, 15-14.
However, the match soon turned sideways for the Bengaluru Top Guns. And it started with Kidambi Srikanth losing their trump game inflicting negative points. Tanongsak S took the match far more comfortably than one would have imagined winning 15-11, 15-9 as Srikanth lacked winning final points during the match.
Saina Nehwal next came up with Awadhe Warriors trump game and she took it in style against Suo Di to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the tie. Saina defeated her opponent 15-10, 15-8. Her win was followed up by Bodin Issara and Cai Yun in the men’s doubles extending the win margin to 4-1.
With this performance Saina’s Awadhe Warriors go up on the table and join leaders Mumbai Rockets with nine points each.
