Australia Win 2nd ODI Despite Rohit Sharma Ton

Yet another sparkling century from Rohit Sharma was sullied by a sub-optimal bowling performance by his teammates. Despite putting up a massive total of 308/8 in 50 overs, India failed to put up a fight with the ball and consequently lost the 2nd ODI at Brisbane. Half centuries from Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh and George Bailey ensured a carefree chase for Australia.

India bat first, Rohit Sharma on fire once again

Notwithstanding certain elements, India’s batting performance at Brisbane today was more or less an encore of the one at Perth, a couple of days ago. Shikhar Dhawan was out cheaply. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli took charge of the innings and forged a crucial second wicket partnership. Sharma went on to register yet another ton, while Kohli’s innings was cut short by a brilliant throw from Kane Richardson in the deep.

Ajinkya Rahane’s brilliant 80-ball-89 was perhaps the only takeaway for India from the game, other than Sharma’s ton. With 8 wickets in hand in the 43rd over, and the scoreboard reading 255, India were in sight of a 330+ total. However, as MS Dhoni later admitted in the post match press conference, the batsmen failed to push on in the death overs.

Top order helps Australia cruise to victory

Despite the addition of Ishant Sharma to the lean bowling attack, India failed to put up an effective defence of the target. Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh ran away with the chase with a 145-run opening stand in 24 overs. The bowlers failed to come to terms with the flatness of the pitch once again and could not plug the flow of easy runs at any stage in the innings.

Barinder Sran, India’s top wicket taker from the 1st ODI, went wicketless today, while Ishant and Umesh collectively conceded 134 runs in their 20 overs, picking up just 2 wickets. Ashwin and Jadeja were put to the sword yet again, and George Bailey never let them settle down during the middle overs. Bailey’s breezy, unbeaten 58-ball-76 made sure that Australia were comfortably placed to achieve the target at all points of time.
