The pairing of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won their second trophy of the year by clinching the WTA Apia International Title in Sydney.
The duo had a hard fought battle with Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic. Carolina and Mladenovic troubled the top seeds in the first set when they won it comfortably with a score of 1-6. Sania and Hingis, however, played their experience card and came back strongly in the second and third set.
The Indo-Swiss pair won the second set with a score of 7-5 and went on to clinch the third set in a long tie-breaker. The third set finally went in favor of the top seeds for 10-5. The final score read 1-6, 7-5, 10-5 in favor of Sania and Hingis.
This is the 30th straight win of Sania and Hingis.
“It was definitely a great test, and against a great new team. They were playing together for the first time this week, and I think we’re going to see a lot more of them. We had to take our chances. You don’t see much light in a dark tunnel, but then we had one or two opportunities here and there, and with one little chance we were able to turn the match around,” Hingis said.
This is the 11th WTA doubles title for Sania and Hingis and they have a great record of 11-1 in finals.
