Australian Open: Djokovic, Federer Advance To Third Round


It was a day for the top seeds at the Australian Open on the third day. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova registered comfortable victories. However, it was mixed feelings for the Indian supporters as Mahesh Bhupathi along with Gilles Muller won, while Leander Paes and his partner Jeremy Chardy failed to advance from the first round.

Top Seeds shining on day 3 at Australian Open

Both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer won in straight sets against their unseeded opponents.

Djokovic dominated his match in the first two sets winning 6-1, 6-2 but a wounded Quentin Halys struck back strongly in the third set leading on points. But, in a dramatic turn of events Djokovic equalled at 5 all before taking the third set to win the match. Federer on the other hand won the first set comfortably 6-3 but faced a bump in the second set as Alexandr Dolgopolov made a stunning comeback which still fell short. The former world number one won 6-3, 7-5, 6-1.

Women’s top seed Serena Williams overpowered Su-Wei Hsieh in about an hour. She won 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. Maria Sharapova registered her second round victory winning 6-1, 6-2 against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Mixed day for Indian supporters

Leander Paes playing with his new partner Jeremy Chardy at the Australian Open received a tough fight in the opening round. The pair lost to Juan Sebastien Cobal and Robert Farah of Colombia in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. But Mahesh Bhupathi and his partner Gilles Muller advanced to the second round of men’s doubles with a win over home boys Alex Bolt and Andrew Whittington. Bhupathi and Muller faced hardship in the opening set winning 7-6 (7-4). Bolt and Whittington took the second set 6-3 and threatened the experienced duo but failed to finish the match on a high losing 6-4.
