Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams registered wins in the third round of the Australian Open. Former world no. 1, Roger Federer’s victory over Grigor Dimitrov helped him reach a new record in the Grandslam era winning his 300th match. However, the result for the veteran Indian doubles player Mahesh Bhupathi disappointed the Tennis faithful in India.
Roger Federer’s new record, Djokovic, Serena advance
In the third round of the Australian Open Roger Federer played Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in a four-set battle to register his 300th victory. The former world no. 1 faced some hassle in the second set where he went down fighting. But he was quick to recover and did not allow the Bulgarian to dominate play. The final score-card read 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in favour of the Swiss.
Top seed in men’s singles Novak Djokovic registered a comfortable victory in straight sets over Andreas Seppi. The Serbian won the first set with a comfortable score-line of 6-1. Djokovic justified his place on top of the tennis world winning 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in a tough fight against the veteran Italian.
In the women’s singles, top seed Serena Williams dominated play against the nineteen year-old Daria Kasatkina. The Russian lost in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in just 44 minutes. Agnieszka Radwanska too registered victory in straight sets as the score-card read 6-4, 6-0.
Former world no.1 Maria Sharapova faced a tough task against 103rd ranked Lauren Davis of the USA in a thrilling three setter. Sharapova dominated the first set winning 6-1 and then faced an unexpected rise in performance from her opponent that resulted in a 77 minute long battle in the second. Davis took the second set 7-6 (7-5) before bowing out without any competition in the third set losing 6-0.
Bhupathi loses, Bopanna advances
Mahesh Bhupathi and Gilles Muller faced one of the toughest opponents in men’s doubles the Bryan brothers. The American pair overpowered the Bhupathi-Muller in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in under an hour. However, Bopanna and Mergea brought some good news for the Indian tennis fans by winning their second round match against the Czech pair of Lukas Dlouhy and Jiri Vesely. The score-card read 6-3, 6-2.
