Novak Djokovic stole his way from Gilles Simon in the fourth round of the Australian Open in a marathon match lasting over four and a half hours to avoid his name on the list of seeded casualties. Good news for Indian fans as Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna both advanced from their first round matches in the mixed doubles.
Novak Djokovic wins marathon, Serena and Sharapova win easy
It ended up being a very difficult game for the top seeded Serbian at the Australian Open against Frenchman Gilles Simon. Novak won the first set, then going down in the second and the scheme continued over the next three sets winning alternative sets. The world no. 1 finally emerged victorious in the fourth round winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
In the women’s singles it was another easy outing for both Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, who won their respective match in straight sets. Serena continued to dominate her way through demolishing Margarita Gasparyan in under an hour 6-2, 6-1. On the other hand, Sharapova faced a difficult time against Belinda Bencic but managed to win 7-5, 7-5.
Paes advances, Bopanna’s mixed results
Leander Paes with partner Martina Hingis had an easy outing against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Dominic Inglot winning 6-3, 7-5. Bopanna-Mergea pair failed to do so in the men’s doubles playing against Treat Huey and Max Mirnyi losing in straight sets 7-4, 6-3. However, he made it up by winning his mixed doubles match along with partner Yung-Jan Chan.
